Our Goals
We p rovide a safe environment for those in need of acute psychiatric care. Patients receive a comprehensive evaluation and intensive multidisciplinary treatment to facilitate their reentry into the community.
Our Program
Upper Chesapeake Behavioral Health Services is dedicated to providing acute, intensive, short-term inpatient psychiatric treatment for individuals 16 years of age or older. Managed by Sheppard Pratt Health System, our 21-bed inpatient psychiatric unit is located at Harford Memorial Hospital. Our facility accommodates medically compromised and physically disabled patients. We care for patients experiencing serious emotional difficulties, including:
- Affective Disorders
- Anxiety Disorders
- Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders
- Behavioral complications of dementing illnesses and strokes.
Program Components
Our multidisciplinary team of professionals includes:
- Psychiatrists
- Physicians
- Nurses
- Social Workers
- Behavioral Health Counselors.
The components of our program include services for adult and geriatric populations and are available on an inpatient and outpatient basis. They are:
- Psychiatric evaluation and treatment
- Medical evaluation and treatment
- Nursing assessment and intervention
- Social work assessment and intervention
- Family Therapy
- Group Therapy
- Coordination of discharge planning
- ECT (Electroconvulsive Therapy)
- Performed on inpatient and outpatient basis by a team of specially trained medical professionals
- Safe and effective medical treatment for severe major depression, manic depression and some types of schizophrenia
- Nutritional counseling and guidance as needed
- Medication education
- Alcohol and drug assessments
- AA and NA self-help groups
- Psychiatric Home Health in conjunction with Upper Chesapeake/St. Joseph Home Care.
Our Admission Procedure
Emergency admissions can be made through the Emergency Departments at Harford Memorial Hospital and Upper Chesapeake Medical Center, as well as other hospital emergency departments within this region.
Direct admissions from healthcare professionals are accepted for individuals who have been medically cleared. Voluntary and involuntary admissions are accepted.
Resource and Referrals
Upper Chesapeake Behavioral Health Services Resource Line accepts calls 24-hour, 7 days a week. The nurses staffing the referral line provide:
- 24-hour coverage
- Triage to appropriate mental health resources
- Facilitation of referrals for direct admission from emergency departments or other healthcare providers.
