Pneumococcal vaccination for persons 65 years and older is effective in preventing pneumococcal bacterial infection. Technical Includes inpatients discharged with a principal diagnosis of pneumonia who are age 65 years and older. Excludes patients transferred from another hospital, patients who died or left AMA, patients who had no working diagnosis of pneumonia, patients admitted for comfort measures only and patients who had no chest x-ray or CT scan that indicated positive infiltrate within 24 hours prior to hospital arrival or anytime during hospitalization.
