The Upper Chesapeake Health Sports Medicine Team believes that if you're active, you're an athlete, and our program is built around providing the most comprehensive care for you and other athletes in our community. Our multidisciplinary team approach brings together orthopedic surgeons, primary care sports medicine physicians, athletic trainers and physical and occupational therapists to treat a wide range of sports related injuries.
Sports related injuries can range from sprains and strains to tendon injuries requiring surgical intervention. Our Sports Medicine Team can provide you with an individual treatment plan that will get you back to your highest level of activity. Community Outreach / High School Athletic Trainer Support
The Upper Chesapeake Health Sports Medicine Team provides certified athletic trainers to: The John Carroll School
In addition to providing athletic trainers, the UCH Sports Medicine Team is focused on educating our community coaches on the prevention and initial treatment of sports related injuries through our Coaches' Clinics. Coaches' Clinic programs are specifically tailored to each athletic season and focus on:
- Techniques to prevent injuries through proper stretching and conditioning
- Signs and symptoms of a concussion (Traumatic Brain Injury or TBI)
- Common sport specific injuries, including initial treatment and recommendation on referrals to a physician
- Hydration and nutrition recommendations
The
clinics are presented by a team comprised of a physician and a physical
therapist from the UCH Center for Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Physical and occupational therapists trained in orthopedics and sports medicine provide quality care in an outpatient setting at the Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Center located at the Y in Abingdon. Rehabilitative therapy is available to help individuals with the following conditions:
- Orthopedic and sports medicine injuries
- Overuse injuries
- Muscle strains and sprains
- Back/neck pain
- Arthritis
- Chronic pain
- Sports Performance and improvement
- Joint replacement
Hand Therapy Services
A certified hand therapist at the Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation
Center offers comprehensive and customized rehabilitation to restore hand & upper
extremity function to the greatest degree possible for injuries and conditions such as:
- Fractures and dislocations
- Traumatic hand injuries
- Tendonitis
- Tendon injuries/ruptures
- Muscle sprains and strains
- Overuse injuries
