If
you are one of the millions of Americans seeking relief of knee or hip joint
pain, stiffness and immobility, the Upper Chesapeake Health Joint Center offers
a unique team approach to joint replacement surgery that promotes healing and
gets you back to a more active lifestyle. Our expert team of board certified
orthopedic surgeons, nurses and rehabilitative professionals use a wellness patient-focused
approach to provide relief for your joint pain. You can expect to spend less
time in the hospital and enjoy having a loved one as a care partner to be at
your side during your hospital stay. Your care partner will receive extensive
information about your surgery and learn about caring for you after surgery.
As part of our group philosophy, you will benefit from being with other joint
replacement surgery patients for exercise, classes, meals and therapy.
Care Partners
The Joint Center's group model promotes team spirit
and support among the participants. Each patient has a care partner,
a friend or loved one, who serves as a support person. The camaraderie
between the patient and care partner encourages quicker healing, builds
confidence and reduces the anxiety associated with rehabilitation. Care
partners are trained in the recovery process and attend the group sessions
to act as coaches. Your care partner will help keep you on tract and
geared towards leaving the hospital and returning to a more active life.
If you can not identify a care partner, a volunteer care partner is provided.
A Learning Experience
The Joint Center's comprehensive program focuses on patient education
and expectations, group therapy, integrative healing therapies and the
use of care partners. Prior to surgery you and your care partner will
attend an education class where members of our interdisciplinary team
review expectations, our group therapy approach and the role of the care
partner. The information you learn at this session is reinforced in a
comprehensive patient notebook and daily newsletters you receive during
your hospital stay.
A Team Approach
The Joint Center has nursing and rehabilitative
team members dedicated just to caring for you. They work with you to
ensure you are progressing and able to reach higher activity levels during
your hospital stay. Each patient is fully evaluated by our physical and
occupational therapists. As a group, patients attend exercise classes
that focus on your need after surgery, how to get around safely and activity
of daily living skills. Our nurses work proactively with the group to
keep pain in check. You are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing as
soon as possible to facilitate a well environment.
